Epoxy vs polyaspartic: what is the difference, and what does it cost?
They are often sold as competing products. They are more usefully understood as different layers of the same job.
They are not really competitors
A finished garage floor is usually three things: the prepared concrete, a base coat, and a topcoat. Epoxy is a good base — thick, strong, and it bonds well to properly ground concrete. Polyaspartic and polyurea are usually the topcoat, chosen because they cure in hours rather than days and hold their colour under UV.
So when an installer says “we do polyaspartic, not epoxy”, they usually mean their whole system is built on polyurea and polyaspartic chemistry rather than epoxy. And when another says “full flake epoxy with a polyaspartic topcoat”, that is not a compromise — it is the common premium build. Comparing the two on the word alone tells you almost nothing.

What the upgrade costs, on a 400 sq ft garage
- Standard flake: $2,450 – $3,800, typically around $3,150.
- Premium flake with polyaspartic topcoat: $2,600 – $4,600, typically around $3,600.
- Top tier, diamond-ground: $2,950 – $5,450, typically around $4,200.
On a sound, bare two-car slab the step from standard to premium flake is roughly $500 at the midpoint. That is the number worth arguing about, and it is small enough that preparation quality should probably decide your installer before chemistry does.
The thing neither product fixes
Coating failures are far more often a preparation problem than a product problem. A premium polyaspartic system over a poorly prepared slab will lift; a mid-range epoxy over properly diamond-ground concrete generally will not. If you are deciding where to spend an extra few hundred dollars, surface preparation is the better bet.
When the upgrade is easiest to justify
- You need the garage back in service quickly and cannot lose it for several days.
- The door is open for long stretches and the floor sees real sunlight.
- The floor takes genuine abuse — a workshop, hot tyres, dropped tools, chemicals.
- You are already paying for diamond grinding and want the finish to outlast it.

Common questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?
They do different jobs. Epoxy is a strong, thick base that bonds well to prepared concrete. Polyaspartic and polyurea are typically used as topcoats: they cure much faster, tolerate a wider temperature range during installation, and resist yellowing from UV better than most epoxies. Many premium Austin garage floors are an epoxy or polyurea base with a polyaspartic topcoat, so the honest answer is often that you are not choosing between them at all.
How much more does polyaspartic cost?
On a typical 400 square foot two-car garage in Austin, moving from a standard flake system to a premium flake system with a polyaspartic topcoat is a difference of a few hundred dollars at the midpoint. The exact gap depends on the size of the floor and how much preparation the slab needs.
Is polyaspartic really a one-day floor?
Fast cure is the main practical advantage, and one-day installation is widely advertised in Austin on that basis. Whether a specific floor can be finished in a day depends on how much preparation and crack repair it needs — grinding and repairs happen before any coating goes down, and a slab in poor condition is what turns a one-day job into a two-day one.
Does UV yellowing matter in a garage?
It matters most where sunlight actually reaches the floor: the strip inside the door, and garages that are left open for long stretches. A garage that is usually closed sees little direct UV. If your door is open most of the day, a UV-stable topcoat is a more defensible upgrade than it would otherwise be.
